50th Anniversary Photo Contest Winner

Congratulations to Sky Bressette for his winning submission to the student photo contest. Admire Sky’s photo on the C/AM homepage banner.

Sky’s remarks on his photo submission:

“I call the photo ‘An Imperfect Seam.' It is an aerial photo of the Blaine Border Crossing which in my opinion represents much of what the Canadian-American Studies program represents. The railroad representing the deep economic ties between the two nations. The customs and border patrol representing the thousands of people who (at least used to) cross the border every day. The skyscrapers of White Rock representing Canada’s vastly urbanized society.  The small dot of the border markers representing an invisible line dividing the land. The tidal flats of Semiahmoo Bay representing the environmental impacts that transcend this line. And lastly, the Peace Arch representing both an inseparable bond between two nations, as well as a shared problematic history of racism and oppression.”
